Job Description
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Radiation Oncology is responsible for the coordination and delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and following all established standards of practice, Nursing Code of Ethics and State and Federal guidelines. The RN adheres to all Stamford Hospital’s policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct and Corporate Compliance Program. The RN ensures provision of safe and therapeutic care using the values inherent in our hospital culture. The registered nurse demonstrates initiative, knowledge and clinical skills in caring for the patient with complex needs. The Registered Nurse demonstrates the ability to effectively manage patients by assuming full responsibility for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of patient care and is directly responsible to a designated nurse manager.
This position is Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm, NO Weekends or Holidays!
Delivers expert, evidence-based nursing care to patients and families.
Implements nursing process: Assesses patient and family needs; Implements the plan of care; Evaluates the patient’s response to interventions.
Sets priorities when organizing care for patients with varying acuity.
Maintain continuity of care through clear and concise (verbal and written) communication.
Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of growth and development of the adult and geriatric patient.
Documents patient care in a manner that is clear, complete, concise and in compliance with nursing documentation standards.
Creates a comprehensive plan of care based on data from an initial assessment of patient and family, information from other members of the health care team, referrals and previous medical records.
Develops a comprehensive educational plan for the patient and family, utilizing appropriate resources and documents according to the department’s documentation standards.
Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care, and documents progress in meeting stated goals. Revise’s plan of care as needed to achieve desired outcomes.
Identifies appropriate community resources to promote continuity of care and makes appropriate referrals.
Participates actively in the unit-based, organizational educational programs, organizational quality management and/or quality improvement programs. Disseminates information to peers.
Provides a safe environment for patients, staff, family and visitors.
Administers medication safely (when applicable) according to established policies and procedures. Responsible for maintaining emergency medications for CT Simulations.
Performs nursing procedures safely and efficiently.
Uses equipment safely and efficiently.
Demonstrates awareness of potential/actual risks of infection and modes of transmission. Utilizes universal precautions in nursing practice.
Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately. Maintains BLS certification.
Interacts with patients and families in a caring and compassionate manner respecting the need for privacy and confidentiality.
Communicates effectively with all members of the health care team and related departments to provide accurate information about the care of the patients.
Displays a positive attitude and works to achieve an environment of respect, accountability, teamwork, integrity, and compassion. Does not support or take part in disruptive or negative behavior.
Develops, utilizes and evaluates unit-specific standards of care.
Upholds the A.N.A. code of ethics and acts as a role model to other staff members.
Develops approaches to problem solving which meet the individual needs of the patients and families.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care and support to the populations served.
Fosters an environment that is sensitive to the needs of diverse populations, including but not limited to culture, ethnicity, gender, and age.
Demonstrates flexibility in setting and changing priorities. Accepts additional responsibilities as needed.
1. Valid CT RN State License
2. BSN Required
3. Certification in Oncology Nursing, OCN preferred. Required within 24 months of hire.
4. Valid BLS certification
5. Requires extensive knowledge in Oncology nursing and advanced knowledge of principles and practices within the field of nursing and excellent interpersonal skills to deal with critically and sometimes terminally ill cancer patients. Must be able to demonstrate excellent critical thinking skills.
