Job Description

The Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering (MME) at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for the position of Manager, Mining Engineering Laboratories. This key role supports both the instructional and research missions of the department by overseeing a range of specialized laboratories, including those dedicated to rock mechanics, ventilation, surveying, mineral processing, and related fields. Reporting to the Department Chair, the Laboratory Manager works closely with faculty to schedule and support laboratory activities for undergraduate courses and graduate research projects each semester. The manager facilitates hands-on instruction in the labs, may occasionally deliver theoretical content, and is expected to have strong practical skills in designing, maintaining, and repairing laboratory equipment.

In addition to lab oversight, the Manager actively contributes to outreach and recruitment efforts. This includes conducting live demonstrations for prospective students, hosting campus tours, and participating in visits to high schools to promote the department’s undergraduate programs. The position also carries responsibility for ensuring safety and regulatory compliance within all laboratories under their supervision. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a collaborative mindset suited to an academic environment.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and four (4) years of related work experience OR

Master’s Degree and two (2) years of related work experience.

Related Experience: Lab operation management, supervision, data management, outreach, safety procedures, quality control, compliance, technical expertise regarding lab equipment, record keeping, scheduling, conducting experiments and procedures, determining physical properties and characteristics for metal and alloy samples or related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work in recruitment

  • Supervision of individuals in a laboratory setting

  • Demonstrated work in safety assurance and regulatory compliance

  • Familiarity with funded research laboratory activities
