Summary of Position


Position Overview
The City of Golden Valley's Community Development team is seeking a motivated, talented, and socially conscious individual for the Housing & Economic Development Intern. An individual in this position will have the opportunity to assist on several development projects as well as the opportunity to create and develop marketing materials, produce new events for housing, research emerging trends in housing and economic development, and gather data for housing and economic development projects in the community. The Intern's work can vary based on their particular areas of interest, including various aspects of housing, business development, planning, research and analysis, and/or program administration.
Expected Hours of Work
Hours are typically Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. In addition to working office hours, staff may be required to work additional events, which may include nights or weekends. This temporary position has a maximum term of 500 hours. Expectation is up to 40 hours per week in summer.

  1. Creation of marketing materials and event planning for programs in collaboration with other City Departments
  2. Develop a Just Deeds event for the City
  3. Support project staff by researching topics and analyzing data
  4. Support the development and implementation of a Realtor Forum
  5. Support the implementation of small business programs
  6. Support various housing, redevelopment, economic inclusion, and business development activities
  7. Contribute to projects that support accomplishments of City goals.
  8. Participate in various projects with the Community Development Department as needed and per the interest of the intern.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
  • An undergraduate student, post-secondary student or graduate with coursework in housing, economic development, land use, planning and zoning, or equivalent.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous training or experience in housing, economic development, planning, land use and zoning.
  • A year of post-secondary education in related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience working with ArcGIS, asset management software, permit and plan review software, and Microsoft Office 365.

Work Environment and Physical Demands


Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work is conducted mostly indoors with sporadic site visits. Employee can be subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Exposure to adverse weather conditions and/or in the presence of heavy construction equipment may occur on project sites. Employee is subject to noise, but generally free from additional work hazards.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
  • Regularly read and interpret documents and other written material.
  • Regularly communicate and exchange information with others in person, over the telephone, and using written communication methods.
  • Regularly operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools commonly found in city office setting.
  • Regularly travel around the City to meetings or events, operating City vehicles as needed.
  • Frequently remain in a stationary position and regularly move within the building to attend meetings and access files and office machinery.
  • Occasionally move or transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
