Head of Benchmark & Market Data Science

Full-time | Hybrid Chicago, IL | $200k – $350k + Equity

About the Role

A fast-growing institutional trading and data company is building the world’s first institutional-grade benchmark for a critical global commodity. We are seeking a highly motivated data science leader to design, govern, and scale this benchmark — ensuring credibility, regulatory approval, and adoption across global financial markets.

This is a foundational hire that will shape the methodology, data pipelines, and governance standards for a benchmark designed to stand alongside WTI and Brent as a global reference price.

Responsibilities

• Draft and maintain IOSCO-compliant benchmark methodology
• Build and manage data pipelines ingesting order book and trade data
• Apply statistical models for anomaly detection and market surveillance
• Establish benchmark governance and oversight frameworks
• Ensure replicability, auditability, and regulatory compliance
• Design licensing models and collaborate on IP protection
• Engage with data vendors (Bloomberg, Refinitiv, ICE, etc.) to distribute benchmark feeds
• Lead discussions with global exchanges and regulators
• Publish studies (whitepapers, backtesting, liquidity analyses) to support exchange listings

What We’re Looking For

• 5–15 years’ experience in benchmark creation, market data science, or financial engineering
• Background at a major exchange, benchmark provider, or commodity agency (CME, ICE, LME, Platts, Argus, S&P GSCI, etc.)
• Deep understanding of statistical modelling, anomaly detection, and governance standards
• Ability to engage with regulators, vendors, and institutional partners

💰 Salary: $200k – $350k

📍 Location: Chicago (hybrid, ~50% onsite)

📈 Equity: 1% – 2%
