Below is a list of units that accept new graduate nurses in their departments. Apply to find out more information!

CG2 – Stroke Med-Surg: Treats a very diverse, often complex adult population with diseases of the brain and spinal cord including cerebrovascular accident (CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA), brain tumor and aneurysm, dementia, and seizure disorders including epilepsy. Emphasizes a team-based approach and provides a broad knowledge base for experienced and novice nurses alike. Offers specialized education including National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification and neurological nursing care training.

CG3 – Ortho Med-Surg: Fast-paced unit that treats a diverse patient population with musculoskeletal impairment of the muscles, bones, or joints including total joint replacement, spine surgery, and bariatric surgery. Nationally recognized and accredited programs for spine surgery, total hip replacement, total knee replacement, and care of patients with severe obesity. Collaborates with a team of nurses, physicians, physical and occupational therapists, and other specially trained staff to provide cutting-edge care in a healing environment.

CG4 - Cardiac Acute Care: Designated Advanced Heart Failure Center by the Joint Commission for excellence in heart failure care. Specializes in the care of cardiac and respiratory patients with a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), congestive heart failure (CHF), coronary artery disease (CAD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and other conditions requiring closer monitoring and treatment. Offers additional education including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and dysrhythmia training.

CG5 - Oncology: Committed to providing high quality and compassionate care for patients in the diagnostic stage of cancer, active treatment for cancer, as well as non-cancerous conditions. Emphasizes a family-centered approach and offers a broad knowledge base for experienced and novice nurses alike. Specialized training provided for chemotherapy and biotherapy administration through Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).

CGICU - Medical-Surgical Intensive Care: Specializes in the care of acutely ill adults requiring advanced ventilatory and hemodynamic support to overcome a critical illness. Emphasizes a team-based approach to care supported by a team of nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists providing fast-paced high-quality care. Provides specialized education including skilled precepting and mentoring supported by American Association of Critical Care Nurses (ACCN).

A role that requires independent judgment, fluent communication, and candid partnership, the Professional Staff Nurse establishes relationships with physicians, other care providers, patients, and patients’ families to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.

Shifts/Hours : Our RNs work a rotating 12-hour schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor. 

\n

Graduate Nurses must be eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role OR ability to start with TPP and must obtain license within 6 months of beginning position. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the My Nursing Career Ladder based on their individual experience and education.

Qualifications

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • \n
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
  • \n
  • Zero to one year of experience. Completion of UPMC student nurse internship or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred BSN preferred.
  • \n
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • \n
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • \n
  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • \n
  • Good clinical judgment. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • \n
  • OF Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
UPMC approved national certification preferred. Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date, or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.
