Director of Communications

The Director of Communications is responsible for developing and executing integrated, omni-channel communications strategies to build brand awareness, engage target audiences, and drive program and event participation. This role oversees external communications, channels, and media relations efforts, managing a team of specialists and external vendors. The Director collaborates closely with internal stakeholders and marketing staff to achieve campaign and organizational goals that enhance the overall brand.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and execution of cohesive communications strategies and campaigns to enhance brand visibility and member engagement.
  • Define, evolve, and manage brand/identity standards to ensure clear and consistent articulation of key messages, visual brand adherence, and desired brand positioning.
  • Develop and execute media relations campaigns; serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries and interview requests; create and maintain a library of key messages, talking points, and other PR resources.
  • Create and lead content calendar and editorial plans to ensure messaging consistency and optimal audience engagement.
  • Lead and manage a creative communications team, ensuring achievement of marketing communications objectives and tactical support to internal stakeholders.
  • Accountable for marketing and communications channel operations and platforms, including websites, social media, email, podcasts, video, collateral, exhibits, and newsletters.
  • Measure and regularly report communication campaign and channel performance, implementing data-driven optimizations to maximize ROI.
  • Develop and manage annual and programmatic communications and channel budgets. Track and report performance, including utilization and ROI to maximize impact and ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, or a related field; Master's preferred.
  • 7+ years of related experience in marketing, communications, or public relations, with a proven track record of developing and implementing successful omni-channel campaigns.
  • Expertise in digital and traditional marketing communications and operational platform management.
  • Strong project management, vendor relations, and budget management skills.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and mentor a team of creative communications professionals.
  • Experience with non-profits, associations, or academic institutions strongly preferred.
